Bob Courchesne’s classroom at Furnace Brook Middle School showcases his passion for language and international flair.
The colorful posters, globes and messages in foreign words provide the atmosphere for middle school students, and Courchesne said is interest in other cultures reaches far beyond the school day.
“I am the same person inside the classroom as I am when I leave,” he said.
Courchesne recently announced his plans to retire from Furnace Brook after 35 years teaching languages in the Marshfield Public School system. He said today’s America has become very “Anglicized.”
“After three generations, a foreign language disappears in the home,” he said. “It is important for today’s use to understand this so they will see other languages besides English as valuable.”
Born in the French district of Worcester, Courchesne spoke no English during the early part of his childhood. As the son of immigrants, he was raised in a neighborhood segregated by language and culture. The French quarters were self-contained, with a church, school and five-and-dime store nearby, leaving no reason for residents to venture outside of the immediate region.
His education led him to more diverse educational programs in Worcester and eventually in Minnesota. As his love of language flourished, he discovered a passion and talent for theater. During times spent combining his two interests, Courchesne participated in diction, stage direction, drama, stagecraft and performance while overseeing various well-known plays from George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” to Jean-Paul Sartre’s “No Exit.” Radio broadcasting was also among his endeavors.
A brief time teaching junior college in the Worcester area preceded his arrival in Marshfield, where he began instructing young learners and infusing a community with an appreciation of language.
“I consider myself a linguist,” he said. “With the students I try to impart a love of language, an appreciation of other cultures and the awareness that every language that exists has a purpose.”
Courchesne was part of the frontier of modern instruction when he participated in “team teaching” in the mid-1970s. He and his colleagues saw the value of combining modern language with art and history.
“One of the greatest rewards of teaching is witnessing young learners as they develop language skills and watching them grow,” he said. “An advantage to being in the same place for a long time is that I get to see how former students evolve. I have colleagues who were students and students whose parents were in my class. The continuity and value of having deep community roots is unmatched.”

Rita Hapenney
Rita (Thorpe) Hapenney, of Marshfield, died March 2, in the Golden Living Center in Plymouth, at the age of 97. Wife of the late Walter Hapenney. Sister-in-law of John and Joyce Hapenney and Katherine Hapenney, all of Marshfield. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Rita was born in Boston. She was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII. Rita was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and The Presidential Testimonial. A funeral service was held at the MacDonald Funeral Home, l755 Ocean St., Rte. l39, Marshfield on Tuesday, March 8, at l2 noon. Visiting was held from 11:30 to 12:00 prior to the service. Thelma S. (Bragdon) Corcoran Antoine, of Marshfield passed away on March 2, at the age of 93. Wife of the late Francis J. Antoine and Peter A. Corcoran. Sister of the late Clayton C. Bragdon of Whitman and the late Marion L. Bragdon of Marshfield. She is survived by many great-grandchildren. Thelma was born in Hingham and graduated from Hingham High School. During the war she worked for the Navy Department and in l977 retired from the VA Medical Center in Brockton. Thelma was a member of the Marshfield Methodist Church where she was the organist for several years. Funeral service was held at the MacDonald Funeral Home, l755 Ocean St., Rte. l39, Marshfield on Tuesday, March 8 at l0 a.m. Visiting hours were held on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be on Tuesday at The Hingham Cemetery(Old Ship Cemetery) following the service. Marshfield residents gather to talk issues

Steve Lynch had a simple suggestion for residents gathered at an informal meeting to discuss issues facing the town, including budget concerns and the proposed new Marshfield High School, Feb. 9 at the Marshfield Masonic Hall.
“We need to find people of like minds, get contact information and be sure they understand the importance of being at Town Meeting,” he said.
Several dozen residents convened at the forum as a first step in taking action about town issues. Former resident Steve Whitmore, whose parents still live in Marshfield, moderated the discussion, although he would not express opinions about fiscal expenditures likely to be proposed at Town Meeting April 25, including work at Ventress Memorial Library, seawall repairs and a feasibility study and design work for a new high school.
“This is your town and no one else’s,” he said more than once. “If it is what you want, only you can make change.”
The attendees had diverse interests, but speakers shared a common desire to limit town spending, make what they saw as sensible and feasible choices and determine methods that would help them accomplish their goals at Town Meeting.
“There is so much at stake,” resident Carole Hayes said. “We should have more options and more information. So many people care about Marshfield, and it is hard to know where and how to be able to make a difference. Accused killer of Maine man cries during his arraignment for murder and arson

David B. Silva Jr., the former Carver man accused of murdering the Maine man who welcomed him into his home, was arraigned Monday on charges of murder, arson and robbery.
Silva, 32, cried as Justice Michaela Murphy of Kennebec County Superior Court told him conviction on the murder charge carries a minimum penalty of 25 years to life in prison, and convictions on the other charges carry terms of up to 30 years in prison, The Kennebec Journal reported.
Maine police say Silva shot Robert Orr, 53, in the head on Feb. 8 before robbing him and torching the Readfield, Maine, home they both lived in.
According to relatives, Orr, the son of former Carver Police Chief Thomas Orr, and his wife were letting Silva and his girlfriend to live with them while they got back on their feet.
According to prosecutors, Silva shot Orr to death while his wife was at work and set the house on fire before fleeing to Massachusetts in the dead man’s truck.
Silva left the pickup truck, along with Orr’s American bulldog, Bo, in the parking lot at Marshfield’s Rexhame Beach before hiding out in his parents’ Carver home. He was arrested Thursday after State Police surrounded the house and took him into custody.

Duxbury Boys Basketball Wins Division Title
QUINCY —
The Duxbury High School boys basketball team got a boost heading into the postseason by capturing the Patriot League Keenan Division championship.
The Green Dragons (11-5, 8-3) claimed the crown with two games remaining in the regular season by beating Pembroke, 63-55, Monday night.
Senior Connor Kindregan led Duxbury with 19 points, followed by junior Jason Marino (12 points, 7 rebounds, 5 blocks).
Pembroke was paced by senior James Gaine with 15 points.

Duxbury cleaned up in the relays, winning the 200 free in 1:43.04, thanks to Avery Riddle, Emily Hutchinson, Hannah Hutchinson and Sarah Goldberg. The Green Dragons were second in the 400 free (Shelby Rader, Riddle, Emily Hutchinson, Goldberg, 3:44.96) and fourth in the 200 medley (Rader, Ellie Johnson, Katie Egan, Hannah Hutchinson, 1:56.32).
Individually, Goldberg was third in the 200 free (1:58.51) and fourth in the 100 free (:54.92). Rader was sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:02.24).
Norwell’s Jessie Westergard was third in diving (436.80 points) with Duxbury’s Kelsey Golden (360.45) and Samantha Tougas (356.45) finishing 5-6.

Unit of injured Marshfield soldier returning to Massachusetts Wednesday
When serious facial injuries from an explosion sent Sgt. Breinne Travers home from Afghanistan in August, it meant leaving the soldiers in her unit behind, as she began a journey of healing and rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.
Leaving without her unit was excruciating for Travers, a 13-year member of the National Guard’s 379th Engineer Company.
But on Wednesday, those soldiers will join her on American soil. The unit has completed its year-long mobilization and will return to Massachusetts.
Travers, a 31-year-old Marshfield resident who grew up in Norton, is recovering at Walter Reed with her husband, Joe Sullivan, by her side. She won’t be able to attend the homecoming, her mother-in-law Debbie Sullivan said.
But having her unit home safe is a relief to her, Sullivan said.
“They’ve had one hell of a year, I’ll tell you,” said Sullivan, a Marshfield resident and town employee.
The unit has endured multiple injuries caused by improvised explosive devices during their one-year tour, Sullivan said, and were shaken by Travers’ injuries in August.
Travers, then in her second deployment, was providing protection during transport missions and overseeing engineering projects, like the construction of air and ground communication systems.
Travers and Joe Sullivan, who married in September at Walter Reed after many years together, lived in Marshfield until the deployment last February. Both were in the National Guard and both were members of the 379th Engineer Company. It was the unit’s second deployment since 2003.
Sullivan, an 18-year veteran of the unit, was with a different platoon than Travers. He now is serving as her full-time medical attendant at Walter Reed, his mother said.
Having the couple home together has been a relief to both soldiers’ families as well as to both of them, she said.
“I don’t know what it would be like if she had to do it alone,” said Debbie Sullivan, who found out in August that her son would be also coming home to care for Travers. “(That day) I could finally let my shoulders down and not worry so much.”
Debbie Sullivan is the chairwoman of the unit’s Family Readiness Group and will be in Buzzards Bay on Wednesday when some members of the unit come home there. She will be standing in for Travers and her son.
Though disappointed that she won’t be able to make it to the homecoming, Travers kept a typically positive attitude about the situation, Sullivan said.
“She said it’s probably just as well that the attention be on the men and not on me,” said Sullivan.
It is typical of the attitude that has carried Travers through seven horrific months of recovery, Sullivan said.
“Being the person she is and feeling so lucky that she is alive, she’s fighting it all the way,” Sullivan said. “The best thing about it is her attitude is always awesome.”

A 25-year-old mother and her two-year-old son, who were found in a trash bin outside their Brockton home Sunday night, died from blows to the head, the Plymouth County District Attorney's office said Tuesday.
Maria Avelina Palaguachi-Cela and her son, Brian Palaguachi, died of blunt force trauma to the brain and head, Plymouth County District Attorney's office spokeswoman Bridget Norton Middleton said Tuesday.
Their bodies were recovered Sunday night from a large trash bin outside their home at 437 Warren Ave. Police continue to search for their killer. Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said authorities do not believe the attack was random.

Mariner - Marzelli to ask for postponement of hearing

When selectmen gather Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Martinson Elementary School for a public hearing on the earth removal permit for a 10-acre plot of land near the bridle path off Ferry and Grove streets, Town Counsel Robert Marzelli said he plans to ask selectmen to postpone the hearing due to an error in the notice announcing the hearing.
Peter Armstrong is seeking a permit to remove approximately 460,000 cubic yards of sand and gravel, sell the gravel for a profit and turn the land into two soccer fields for Marshfield Youth Soccer.
According to Marzelli, Armstrong's attorney is worried that if selectmen approve the permit without a properly worded notice, the decision could be subject to appeal. Therefore, Marzelli is going to ask selectmen to delay holding the hearing and repost it for a later date.
Selectmen have to vote to approve the request.

I guess there was like a burned out truck, down at Rexhame Beach, and the cops didn't know what was going on, except everyone was talking about how the truck was from Maine, and that there was some murder thing going on.
